FRENCH NEW WAVE

FRENCH NEW WAVE

French new wave was a new form of film to capture the spotaniouse and nonchalant attitude of the french youth.

Early proceeder to French new wave was Italian realism.
Italian realism was a naturalistic form of acting and camera shots to show the world of the charicter as a real fictional alterante universe.

One film maker (Edison; also the inventor of the light bulb) used a series of images in a roll to create moving images or short repetitive movies (kinda like a gif)

24 frames per second is the "old Hollywood standard"and the style used in the early french new wave films.

The standard is 30 and the choice for slow motion is 60 fps.

George melies considered the father of special effects. Also was known to crest sets that gave optical illusions of something being different from what it was (bugger smaller longer ect)

D W GRIFFITH was one of cinemas earliest directors and producers known for his film birth of a nation, but unfortunately his cinematic achievements are often undermined by his bigotry philosophy and racially charged films.

Event Garde Film

Over this week in film, we have been studying the defining aspects of Avent Garde film, what makes it unique, and how to identify a Avent Garde film.

One defining quality of these films is that the creative brain behind the films is in charge and creates the whole film. This includes everything from producing to filming to screenplay and even sound and editing. Shane Carruth is a Avent garde film director who does it all, he created produced filmed and wrote for the movie titled Upstream Color. Event garde films are expensive, they are filmed, and produced, at the personal expense of the creator. They are usually not for profit, or at the most shown in small art house theaters. Avent films are non linear and don't follow a story line, they make up for lack of story plot with visually interesting themes and unusual aesthetics, Brakhage, the creator of Mothlight, is a master of unusual editing and film mutation, he uses old film and paint directly onto it and placing leaves and moths wings onto the film, creating an effect making the audience feel as if they are looking through a microscope.
