Event Garde Film

Over this week in film, we have been studying the defining aspects of Avent Garde film, what makes it unique, and how to identify a Avent Garde film.

One defining quality of these films is that the creative brain behind the films is in charge and creates the whole film. This includes everything from producing to filming to screenplay and even sound and editing. Shane Carruth is a Avent garde film director who does it all, he created produced filmed and wrote for the movie titled Upstream Color. Event garde films are expensive, they are filmed, and produced, at the personal expense of the creator. They are usually not for profit, or at the most shown in small art house theaters. Avent films are non linear and don't follow a story line, they make up for lack of story plot with visually interesting themes and unusual aesthetics, Brakhage, the creator of Mothlight, is a master of unusual editing and film mutation, he uses old film and paint directly onto it and placing leaves and moths wings onto the film, creating an effect making the audience feel as if they are looking through a microscope.
